Security Guard Services in Houston
Refineries and the port, the medical center, warehouses, and storm season: what Houston sites need and how to find a qualified provider.

Security guard services in Houston at a glance
Houston is one of the largest security markets in Texas, with about 29,000 security guards working in the Houston–Pasadena–The Woodlands metro area, according to May 2025 federal wage data. Demand is driven by refineries and petrochemical plants along the Houston Ship Channel, the Port of Houston, the Texas Medical Center, large warehouse districts, offices, and retail. Officers must be licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety, and armed officers need a commission with Level III training. Storm season adds its own planning needs.

Armed security in Houston
Many Houston buyers ask for armed officers. Texas allows it: armed officers must hold a commission, which requires Level III training of at least 45 hours, a firearms test, and a declaration of psychological and emotional health. But armed coverage is not the safer choice for most sites. It makes sense mainly for cash-in-transit, cash-heavy operations, sites where a law or contract requires it, and sites with a documented risk of armed attack. For offices, retail, warehouses, and most construction sites, well-trained unarmed officers are the better choice.
We recommend armed officers only where the risk truly demands it. In most places, a firearm brings more danger than protection. Read Gyula Györfi's field note on armed guards.
What makes Houston different
Storm season shapes security planning in Houston. Heavy rain can flood streets, parking lots, and ground floors quickly, and hurricanes can shut down normal operations for days. Agree with your provider in advance on who stays on site during a storm, how officers check for flooding and damage afterward, and how everyone stays in contact. On industrial sites, the large perimeters along the Ship Channel and the contractor traffic during turnarounds make patrol records and searchable gate records essential.
What security guards cost in Houston
In May 2025, the median wage for security guards in the Houston–Pasadena–The Woodlands metro area was $17.05 an hour. At that rate, officer wages alone come to about $2,950 a month for a 40-hour-a-week post and about $12,410 a month for a 24/7 post, before payroll taxes, insurance, supervision, and the provider's margin. Armed officers cost more. Our security guard cost guide explains the bill rate, and the cost calculator gives a Texas estimate.
Licensing in Houston
Security officers in Houston follow Texas state rules: Level II training for every officer, a commission with Level III training for armed officers, and a DPS license for the security company. Our Texas page explains the requirements and how to verify a license.
How we recommend a Houston provider
We recommend security companies that hold a current Texas license, carry insurance we confirm with their agent, provide references, have experience with sites like yours, can staff your Houston location, and use Digital Guard Tour patrol verification. These checks reflect the date we made them, so confirm the license and insurance again before you sign.
Records that hold up after a storm or an incident
After a storm, a theft, or an injury on site, the first questions are always the same: who checked what, and when? Records answer them.
The security companies we recommend use Digital Guard Tour, patrol-verification software published by Trinity Guard LLC. Officers scan QR checkpoints on a smartphone and record incidents as they happen, so every round and every report has a time stamp. At gates, officers can also record trucks and vehicles entering and leaving, and every shift ends with a percentage score in the admin dashboard and in the emailed shift report.
